Must-See Museums & Galleries International Museum Day

London is home to some of the most world-class museums and galleries, perfect for educational trips, family days out, and embracing fascinating cultures from all over the world.

Victoria and Albert Museum

Located in the heart of South Kensington is the V&A; the world’s leading museum of art, design and performance.

There is over seven miles of inspiring galleries awaiting you, with exhibitions such as ‘Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature’, ‘Hallyu! The Korean Wave’ and ‘Fashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear’ to name a few.

There’s even an interactive map with a series of online trails to help guide you on your visit, so you won’t get lost.

Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum is a world-class visitor attraction and a leading science research centre.

It has one of the world’s most famous dinosaur exhibits and features treasures from more than 80 million specimens. The museum also features a world-renowned Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, where 100 powerful photographs tell the story of a planet under pressure.

Science Museum

The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace

See changing exhibitions from the Royal Collection at The Queen’s Gallery in Buckingham Palace.

Featuring old master paintings, rare furniture, decorative arts, and images from the vast photograph collection, this exhibition is ideal for anyone who wants to delve into royal history.

Serpentine Gallery

Championing new ideas in contemporary art since 1970, the Serpentine Gallery is home to outstanding exhibitions, architecture, education and live events.

Located in the Royal Park of Kensington Gardens, visitors can enjoy all the wonders of the Serpentine, before venturing into the gardens and enjoying one of London’s greatest green spaces; perfect for picnics and family days out.

Tate Britain

Tate Britain holds the national collection of British art from 1500 to the present day, which includes nearly 70,000 artworks. The contemporary displays present some famous names of contemporary British art with works from Damien Hirst, Cerith Wyn Evans and Mike Nelson.

Aside from its fantastic exhibitions, the Tate Britain also draws visitors with its 360-degree viewing platform which offers stunning views of the city across the River Thames and beyond.

The National Gallery

The National Gallery houses one of the greatest collections of paintings in the world.

London Transport Museum

Discover the history of our capital’s transport at the London Transport Museum.

You can explore the heritage of London and its transport system, as well as the stories of the people who have travelled and worked in the city over the last 200 years, before taking a peek into how future technologies might impact London as we know it.

Our favourite is the hidden London tours, where visitors can see the ‘forgotten’ parts of the Tube network and go behind the scenes at some of London’s busiest stations.

The British Museum

Did you know that The British Museum was the first national public museum of the world?

It holds the treasures of Sutton Hoo, a wonderful collection of the Islamic world, and an abundance of information on the Egyptian mummies; extremely popular with all ages!

The little ones can even get involved in digital workshops as well as daily activities, including trails and arts and crafts.

Imperial War Museum

See war through the eyes of the people who lived it.

Imperial War Museum is the world’s leading museum of war and conflict. From the moment you step into the iconic atrium, to the countless discoveries awaiting you in the award-winning galleries, IWM London examines the continuing influence of war on our world.

Marking the Platinum Jubilee this spring, the museum will explore the role of The Royal Family in conflict, tracing HM The Queen’s personal experience of war through poignant items, including rarely seen film and photography.

Saatchi Gallery

The Saatchi Gallery is housed in the historical Duke of York headquarters on Chelsea’s famous King Road, with three floors and over 70,000 square feet (21,336 square meters) devoted to temporary exhibitions of both homegrown and international artists. Visitors can explore the gallery on a guided or self-guided tour and enjoy access to all of the exhibition areas.
