Hong Kong Outlying Islands Attractions

In this article, we will introduce the five major outlying islands of Hong Kong – Cheung Chau, Lamma Island, Mui Wo, Tai O and Tap Mun, each of which has its own history and story, and is a great place to relax!

Cheung Chau: The best island for family

Cheung Chau is one of the most popular destinations among Hong Kong’s outlying islands. Although it is only 2.9 square kilometres in size, it is rich in history, culture and natural beauty, making it ideal for families.

Cheung Chau Bun Festival: One of the city’s most spectacular festivals marks the end of spring, when thousands of visitors ferry over to the tiny, serene island for the Cheung Chau Bun Festival. Comprising the piu sik parade with children dressed up as deities paraded on stilts, lion dances, Taoist festivals and the exciting Bun Scrambling Competition, the festivities are on China’s national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. From the buns to the bun towers, everything is prepared by the local community, so this is truly a unique Hong Kong festival.

Cycling around the island: If you want to explore the island’s natural beauty, why not rent a bicycle and enjoy a leisurely ride around the island, travelling through the bustling streets and lanes with a gentle breeze.

Transport: Take the MTR to Hong Kong Station or Central Station and walk to Central Pier No.5 for the Cheung Chau ferry.

Lamma Island: An Exotic Fishing Village

Lamma Island is located in the southern part of Hong Kong Island, with beautiful scenery, many foreigners in Hong Kong like to move here.

Hiking: The 5-kilometre long Family Walk from Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu Wan is a popular choice for hiking on Hong Kong’s outlying islands. Along the way, you can not only enjoy the stunning sea view, but also see the Tin Hau Temple, Hung Shing Yeh Beach and other attractions.
Lamma Fisherfolk’s Village: Situated at the beautiful Sok Kwu Wan on Lamma Island, Lamma Fisherfolk’s Village is a showcase of the local fisherfolk culture and the history of fishery industry in the Hong Kong. Occupying an area of over 20,000 square feet, the Village comprises authentic fishing junk, traditional dragon boats, an exhibition hall, themed folklore booths, fishing rafts and dwellings. Visitor can learn and appreciate the heritages and livings of the boat community of Hong Kong.

Transport: Take the MTR to Central Station, walk to Central Pier No.4 and take the ferry to Yung Shue Wan or Sok Kwu Wan.

Mui Wo: A peaceful and relaxing choice

Located near Lantau Island, Mui Wo is an ideal place to enjoy a slow life.

Yuen’s Mansion: Yuen’s Mansion, which consists two watchtowers, a residential block and ancillary buildings, is a rare example of a comprehensive medium size old rural residential building group. It is situated beside Silver River behind Silvermine Bay in Mui Wo, enclosed by extensive fields that connect to the hillsides of Southern Lantau Island. Originally, the mansion used to be protected by a moat, which has been removed.
Silvermine Bay Waterfall: Follow the path along the Olympic Trail for around 20 minutes. This is a very easy stroll for all ages making it one of the easiest waterfalls to reach with kids in all of Hong Kong. Enjoy the morning splashing and swimming in Lantau’s glorious nature. Adventure seekers can climb up above the waterfall to explore the Silvermine Cave, named for all the silver that was mined here years ago.

Transport: Take the MTR to Tung Chung Station and transfer to New Lantao Bus Route 3M to Mui Wo Ferry Pier. Or take a ferry from Central Ferry Terminal to Mui Wo and enjoy the sea view along the way.

Tai O: Stilt-House and the water village

Tai O, also known as the Venice of Hong Kong, is one of the most famous fishing villages in Hong Kong, famous for its unique shanties and rich fishing village culture.

Stilt-House: Tai O is home to the Tanka people, a community of fisher folk who’ve built their houses on stilts above the tidal flats of Lantau Island for generations. These stilt houses are interconnected, forming a tightly knit community that lives on the water.
Tai O Cuisine: Salted fish and shrimp paste are Tai O’s famous specialities. Tai O is situated at the junction of fresh and salt water, where the concentration of sea salt is moderate, so the salted fish dried by the fishermen is particularly sweet! There are also a number of centuries-old shrimp paste farms in Tai O. From shrimp catching, curing to drying, all are done by traditional craftsmen, preserving the most original flavour.

Transport: Take the New Lantao Bus Route 11 from Tung Chung Station to Tai O.

Tap Mun: Hike Through Traditional Fishing Villages

Tap Mun is an outlying island situated between Long Harbour, North Channel and Mirs Bay and is famous for its endless meadows and views of the sea and sky.

Tap Mun Hoi Pong Street: A bygone era of fishing communities survives on the main street of the village, where you can feel the breeze in front of a calm sea with skiffs and fish rafts, savour the local tastes in a seafood restaurant, or buy some Tap Mun sea produce from the street stalls.
Hilltop Pavilion: Follow the path to the left of the abandoned King Lam School until you reach an extensive meadow, and you will understand why Tap Mun is also called Grass Island. Have a picnic at this popular spot, where you will see feral cattle grazing, or take in the magnificent crystal-blue sea from the pavilion at the top.

Transport: Take a ferry from Ma Liu Shui Pier to Tap Mun.
